In this striking view dating about 1860, the woman is posed seated on a wood chair that is turned slightly so that she can rest one arm on its back and casually drape one hand down to display two finger rings for the camera. She is well dressed, not over the top in high fashion, but with an open collar top with pinked edge, fashionable puffed sleeves and ornate, very Victorian bracelets, as well as necklace with locket and a pair of earrings. Her hair appears to be loosely tied back with ribbons showing to the side.

The photographer has lightly gilded her earrings, locket and rings. The most striking thing about the image is the way she looks directly into the lens, serious, calm and utterly self-assured.

The image is very clear and shows no emulsion damage. It is housed in a floral embossed leatherette case with gilt blindstamped edges. It is glassed, matted and framed. The red velvet facing pad with a floral scroll design is in place. This is from the world-class collection of the late Bill Turner, a noted Virginia collector and dealer with a great eye.
