This 1808-1812 U.S. bayonet is unmarked, 16 1/2-inches overall, with an unbridged mortise and slightly squarer shaped shoulders than many produced during the period showing their descent from French patterns, though this one also shows a half-length face flute. This is in excellent condition, was carefully cleaned and shows smooth bright metal overall with only a few small gray or brown stains.
Bayonets of this period offer a wide variety for the collector and this one is an excellent example of those manufactured as tensions rose with Britain and the U.S. worked to establish domestic arms manufacturing before the outbreak of the War of 1812. [SR] [ph:m]
