This is the second type of the Model 1855 sword bayonet. Made to fit the Model 1841 rifles that were not originally fitted for bayonets.
The brass hilt has a mellow, aged patina. “14” engraved on muzzle ring. This “second type” has the two quillions facing forward. The locking spring and button are intact and functional. The unmarked blade is gray with darker spotting overall, but is smooth metal, not pitted. Good edge.
Scabbard is black bridle leather with brass throat and tip. Mellow patina matches that of the bayonet grip. Leather shows one small spot where finish has cracked off. Stitched seam has completely split. Two of the four pins holding throat are missing. Overall a nice scabbard.
A good example of this bayonet for the altered Mississippi that saw service in both the eastern and western theatres. [jet] [ph:L]
