This original Civil War bayonet can be used with either a Justice or Mississippi Rifle.
The Justice is a.69 caliber percussion rifled musket manufactured in 1861 by the Philadelphia firm of P. S. Justice. The Justice Company produced almost 2,200 muskets early in the war to meet the needs of the Union army, and the Mississippi was one of the most widely used long arms with great long-range accuracy. While the Mississippi Rifle ranges between .54 and .58 caliber, the bayonet can be used interchangeably with a Justice rifle because of the Mississippi’s thick barrel.
The bayonet has a dark brown patina and the blade measures approximately 18”. There is a clear “U S” stamped on the flat face, there are no other markings on the item. The socket is just shy of 2 ¾”. Inside the socket there are light signs of oxidation. [mk] [ph:L]
