This is a Confederate Muster Roll from the Alabama Camp of Instruction at Talladega for period July 1, 1864 to August 1, 1864. Pre-printed form filled in with ink. Sheet measures approximately 17” x 18” and is well worn. Piece is heavily wrinkled with tears and small sections missing. Fifty-two men are listed on this form as Company C. Majority of these entries are legible.
Some of the “remarks” include “Det[ached] Ord. Dept. Selma, Ala.”, “Detached Nitre Bureau”, “Maj. Whilthalls Office”, “Provost Guard, Talladega”, “Detached Demopolis Arsenal”, “Detached Shoe Maker”, and numerous “Absent Sick”. Very interesting.
Talladega was one of two camps of instruction established in Alabama for collecting recruits. Faced with a manpower shortage, a compulsory military service law went into effect in April 1862. Most men between the ages of 18 and 35 would be obliged to enroll. Talladega and Notasulga were selected as camp sites to collect recruits. Enrolling officers in each county collected men and took them to camp. After enlistment and “instruction” most of these men would be transferred to other duties or regiments while some were found to be unfit for service. The camp was commanded by Major W. J. Walthall.
The Camp of Instruction, or Conscript Camp, at Talladega was situated between present East and West Streets, traversed by the Sloan Avenue.
A pencil notation “Confederate Notes & Bonds” suggests that this piece was once simply used as a wrapper for other souvenirs.
Well-worn and abused, this remains a fascinating document relating to Alabama and the Confederacy. [jet] [ph:L]
