The bayonet depicted here has an original black bridle leather scabbard with a brass 2 rivet leather frog. There is some evidence of crazing on the body and stitching is open. The finial is brass with mottled dark brown spotting.
The bayonet fits snuggly into the scabbard. The blade measures 16” and the socket measures 3” with a ‘zig zag’ mortise. The locking ring moves smoothly showing signs of rust underneath. There are rub marks on the flat shank and the coloring is a dark brown patina. The letters ‘A D’ are clearly stamped on the shank and there are faint, indistinguishable, letters above the stamp.
This would be a nice addition to any collector interested in an accoutrement first used for percussion muskets and the last of the implements to be used with .69 caliber arms. [MK]
