Remington made all the bayonets for the 6mm Winchester-Lee 1895 Rifles, but Hardin notes that many, like this one, are marked. The rifle was the primary issue long arm of both the US Navy and Marine Corps from 1895 to 1900 and thus saw service around the globe as the U.S. expanded as a world power. The first navy contract in 1898 included some 1,800 for the Marine Corps and about a third of these saw action with the Marines in Cuba. A second navy contract for 5,000 put even more into the hands of sailors who would form naval landing parties that fought along side Marines in many of the “little wars” in the Philippines, China, and elsewhere.

The blade is a light silvery gray, with good edge and point, no nicks or pitting, but with scattered gray spots and striations from cleaning. The wood grips are excellent and fit tightly to the metal. The pommel and guard are smooth metal and light silver gray in color with no pitting. The locking mechanism is functional. The scabbard is scarce in any form and this is the Type-1, which has a pivoting frog that is sewn partway up from the swivel to allow for a belt to pass through the upper loop rather than holding a brass wire belt hook. The deep blue upper and lower mounts are good. The black leather scabbard is shows two horizontal bends front and back that have creased the leather but is still rigid.    [sr]
