This is an original American Civil War saber bayonet manufactured by the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts just prior to the Civil War. Made to fit the infantry length Sharps rifle-musket, records indicate that approximately 2000 of these saber bayonets were produced.
The overall length of this bayonet is 26 ¾” while the graceful-looking, slightly curved blade itself is 22” long. Bayonet was primarily intended for issue to the Federal infantryman. The brass ribbed grip is covered with fine scratches probably caused by someone who once cleaned it with a wire brush. Locking spring and button are present and work well. Portions of a worn serial number are visible on the top flat of the grip.
Blade is dark and the surface has very fine pitting overall. Ricasso has a worn stamp of “AMES MFG. CO. / CHICKOPEE / MASS” on one side and “1860” on the other. Overall this piece shows wear but is still quite presentable. [jet]
