This is a circa 1775-1780 English fusil bayonet and scabbard. The Fusil was a lighter and smaller version of the standard musket for officers and sergeants to carry.
Iron socket bayonet is very good condition. Measures 18” overall with a 14” triangular blade. The two bottom sides feature fullers while the top of the blade remains flat. Stamped either “14” or L4” on the blade. Well made with thick elbow and strong socket. Rolled back edge on socket with unbroken bridge. Iron remains clean and mostly a dark brown color with some brighter patches.
Accompanying leather scabbard is in fairly good condition with the leather remaining strong. The black finish looks nice with very little loss. Tooling around the throat is present as is the brass belt hook. The brass finial at the bottom is missing and the majority of the stitching has split. The top 3” of stitching remains and the rest of the scabbard has retained its triangular shape.
A nice example of a scarce Revolutionary War English bayonet and scabbard. [jet]
