Item Code: 1037-389

Dated 1916 on the spine of the blade, this bayonet for Model 1898 Mauser rifle widens near the tip, earning it the nickname, the “butcher blade” bayonet. This is in excellent condition. The blade is a light silver in color with some scattered gray near the point on the reverse and a little on the ricasso , which has a very crisp maker’s stamp reading: “Fichtel & Sachs / Schweinfurt” under a trademark logo of crossed keys. The edges and point are excellent, with no nicks or sharpening marks. The wood grip is in mint condition and is tight to the metal. The pommel shows lots of thin, faded blue. The locking mechanism works. The release button has some rubbing to gray at the edges from handling. The crossguard shows some gray and brown, but is smooth metal. The quillon has the number “2791.” stamped at the tip. The scabbard shows better than 95 percent coverage of original blue with just minor rubbing to gray at the edges of the throat and on the throat screw, etc., in other words the expected raised areas. Throat screw and frog stud are in place. The upper throat shows a small “K&R” stamp with an “x” stamped over the ampersand.  A very good example of the classic German World War One bayonet.  [SR]

This is a very nice CDV photograph of Charles E. Crow in Confederate uniform. It appears to be a second-generation image; photo of an existing photo. Regardless, the picture is clear with good contrast. Crow wears a Confederate 2nd lieutenant's,… (1138-988). Learn More »
