REMINGTON US MODEL 1917 BAYONET

Item Code: 1037-203

The US Model 1917 rifle was an adaptation of the British Pattern 1914 Enfield. When US inventory and production of the 1903 Springfield could not supply our troops as we entered World War One, the British rifle, already in production by US firms for Britain, was re-chambered and adopted as our Model 1917. The bayonet followed the British pattern of 1913, even to the presence of two grooves on the grips to distinguish it from the P1907 and warn that it would not fit on the Short Magazine Lee Enfield rifle also in use by the British.

This one shows good blue on the reverse pommel, with just some rubbing on the button, and about 40 percent muted blue mixed with gray and brown on the obverse. The wood grips are good, but do show a short gouge on the reverse near the forward spanner. The guard still shows a lot of blue. The blade has a good edge and tip and is bright mixed with brown spots overall. The ricasso is blued on either side. The reverse has a large “1917” stamped over “Remington” curved inside a circle. The obverse has a U.S. ordnance bomb over a “U.S.” with an eagle head inspector stamp and number “27” at left. The scabbard is the Type 1 Variation 2, in good condition with slight flaking to the olive drab paint at the top of the obverse throat. [SR]
