In World War One the Russian government contracted with Remington and Westinghouse to produce Model 1891 Mosin-Nagant rifles to arm its forces. About 1.6 million were made from 1915 to 1917, but only about a quarter of these had been delivered by the time of the Russian Revolution and the new government defaulted on the rest. The U.S. government bought many of these to keep the companies afloat, supplied some to friendly forces such as the Czech Legion in Siberia in 1917 and ended up keeping about 200,000, which it used for training and issued to the National Guard and other groups.
The rifle took a socket bayonet with cruciform blade with spade tip. This one has a small Remington “R” marking and is in excellent condition with about 99 percent of its original deep blue finish and exhibiting much better machining and finish than those made abroad. [sr]
