The Remington rolling block rifle was produced in huge quantities on contract and for commercial sale to foreign governments from the 1860s until well past 1900. The single shot action was simple and sturdy. The guns show up in a variety of calibers and foreign markings indicating ownership by Mexico, Spain, Turkey, Norway, Sweden, Argentina, and Egypt to name just a few. Bayonets for these rifles varied widely also. This is a brass handled sword bayonet with a slightly curved yataghan style blade and a fish-scale grip.
The button and locking mechanism function. The brass has medium tone, neither a dark aged patina or polished, and shows just average wear, with some dings and light scratches but no battering. The blade is dull silver gray in color with scattered dark gray spots overall, but no pitting or edge nicks and a good point. There is no scabbard. Overall length 25 inches, blade length 20.25 inches. As with the overall design, there was choice available to the buyer. The Ames Sword Company offered the bayonet to its customers with either leather or steel scabbard. [sr]
