This fine bayonet is an original American Civil War “Zouave” style saber bayonet. The total length of this bayonet is 25” while the graceful-looking blade itself is just over 20” long. Blade features unstopped fullers, small sub-inspector “S” on ricasso and an undamaged edge.
Issued with the Remington “Zouave” Rifle, a.k.a. United States Percussion Model 1863 Rifle, the saber bayonet’s lines are simple and direct. The bayonet was primarily intended for issue to the Federal infantryman.
The 4 ¾” long cast-brass hilt is secured to the blade via a single transverse steel pin through the guard. Ribbed brass grip area displays minor casting roughness to enhance the grip. Upper top flat of grip area stamped with “BH” just to the rear of the guard. Blade is shiny bright. Cross guard stamped with sub-inspector marks “C” on both sides. Locking spring and button remain in good, operational condition.
Leather scabbard is complete but has two weak spots in the leather. Surface has light surface crazing. Back seam stitching is split along an 8” line in the center of the scabbard. Brass furniture tight to the scabbard body and retains all the small brass rivets / brads at the drag and the upper mount. Brass wears a dark bronze patina.
A handsome “Zouave” bayonet and its accompanying black leather scabbard are a great collectible. [jet]
