This edged weapon is an original American Civil War ‘Zouave’ style sword bayonet made for the Remington rifle. The total length of this bayonet is 25” while the graceful-looking blade itself is 20 1/16” long. Issued with the Remington “Zouave” Rifle, a.k.a. United States Percussion Model 1863 Rifle, the sword bayonet’s lines are simple and direct. Bayonet was primarily intended for issue to Federal infantryman. The 4¾” long all-brass cast hilt is held on the tang by a single transverse steel pin through the guard. Ribbed brass grip area displays minor casting roughness. Upper top flat of grip area stamped with “BH” just to the rear of the guard. Bayonet release button is operable. Blade is shiny. Both flats exhibit light rubbing.
Scabbard is in good overall condition with a strong leather body that shows light to moderate cracking and crazing. All brass wears a dark bronze patina. Backside seam stitching is tight and strong. Scabbard retains the small brass brads at the drag and at the upper mount, along with the button frog. This original American Civil War “Zouave” bayonet with its accompanying scabbard are in good condition. A great military collectible. [sm]
