This is a sword bayonet designed to fit the Pattern 1856, .577 caliber Enfield "2-band" rifled Infantry short-muskets of the period. This features black pressed-leather grips, a cross-bar with a muzzle ring, and “bird’s head” pommel with a channel and spring-steel latch. The cross-bar measures 4 ¼” and has a "cock's-comb" finial atop the muzzle ring and a lower "button" finial. The blade length is about 23" with stopped fullers on both sides. The muzzle ring diameter is approximately 7/8" (internal) diameter. Ricasso is stamped “B” over “72” on one side and “CHAVASSE” in an arc on the other. The pommel is stamped “B” over “81” on the side with the spring-latch.
There are no nicks on the blade and it has a nice tarnished-silver color. The “CHAVESSE” stamp is worn away in the center but still distinguishable. Grips are very good. [jet]
