This fine bayonet is an original American Civil War ‘Zouave’ style saber bayonet. The total length of this bayonet is about 25” while the graceful-looking blade itself is 20” long. Issued with the Remington “Zouave” Rifle, a.k.a. United States Percussion Model 1863 Rifle, the saber bayonet’s lines are simple and direct. The bayonet was primarily intended for issue to the Federal infantryman. The 4¾” long all-brass cast hilt is secured to the blade via a single transverse steel pin through the guard. Ribbed brass grip area displays a nice mellow yellow color. Upper top flat of grip area stamped with “BH” just to the rear of the guard. Blade is shiny and bright and without nicks. Blade is stamped with an “E“ or “H” at the hilt. The brass hilt guard is stamped with sub-inspector mark of “C”.
Leather scabbard body is excellent and features strong leather with no damage. Back seam stitching very strong, all brass furniture tight to the scabbard body and retains all the small brass rivets / brads at the drag and the upper mount. There is one small 1/8” dent in the underside of the brass throat. A handsome “Zouave” bayonet and its accompanying black leather scabbard are in excellent condition. A great collectible. [JET]
