This is a Potts Confederate bayonet with its scabbard. The scabbard is in very good condition with just minor cracking in the leather. The lower hilt assembly features brass attachment ring at the cross guard and pommel. Its four-sided wooden handle has been finely crafted, displaying a dark, richly polished patina; handle is in very good condition with very minimal surface scratches in the wood. The brass on the ends of the scabbard shows minor signs of ageing with some green spots and a 1.5 inch long split in the metal at the tip. The blade is in near perfect condition with just a few dark spots which could be cleaned off to reveal the surface. The blade is 12 inches long from tip to handle, the handle is 4.5 inches long.
Though unmarked, this bayonet blade is an exact match with specimen in the famous Ben Palmer Bowie knife collection bearing the maker-mark: “T.A. Potts/ New Orleans/ 1840”. While the date of manufacture is open to conjecture, it is probable that these bayonets were not government issue but originated with state or militia troops. Although from the Civil War era, its attachment rings are too small to fit the standard .58 caliber Civil War long. Nor does it come with any locking device.
Scarce and highly unique bayonet.
