This Model 1816 bayonet is in good condition. The blade is semi-bright with light to moderate scattered mottling. The socket, knuckle and lower portion of the blade are dark and untouched with light surface rust. Near the mortise is a three digit number. The presence of this number shows Harper’s Ferry manufacture. There is no “US” mark on the blade flat.
The bayonet comes in a well-used and worn Model 1855 six-rivet scabbard. The leather frog is dirty and has moderate to heavy crazing. It is held to the scabbard body by six copper rivets in two rows of three. One row runs diagonal while the other is vertical and close to the scabbard body. There is no stitching. A small section of leather missing from the bottom edge of the frog and has been gone for some time.
The scabbard body has light crazing and minor surface finish loss. Rear stitch seam is tight and brass finial is present.
These two items have been together for a long, long time.
Found in the Antietam area.
