This unmarked harpoon, possibly of the whaling era, consists of a cylindrical wooden pole mounted with a flat, double-edged, double-barbed iron blade at the tip and an iron pointed ferrule at the base. The 4" long wood shaft has a 1¼" diameter at the top and tapers down to a ¾" diameter at the base. Entire wooden shaft is unfinished and features a weathered, light gray coloring. The exposed portion of the barbed tip measures 12¾" long and has its solid iron shaft inserted into the pole. Upper set of barbs measure 2" long while the lower set is 3½" long. Wood shaft is strong and exhibits no cracks, breaks, or any visible repairs. Blade is heavily pockmarked with rust pitting but not bent or broken. Iron ferrule at the base is also heavily rust pitted. Blade tip and the pointed ferrule are held tightly in the wood. An unusual piece of nautical memorabilia.
