Dated “Washington, Feb. 4, 1876.” Addressed to Oaks A. Ames / North Easton, Mass.  2 pp., on unlined paper in ink, w/post-script in pencil on reverse. Exhibits fold-marks. Else VG.

Text:…..”My Dear Mr. Ames….I return herewith the pas you were kind eoungh to send me last fall. It was impossible for my agent to go out then. I now propose sending Mr. Wm. F Shaffer to attend to my business there. If not inconsistent with youre gulations will you pleae send me a pass for him from Omaha to ogden and return in lieu of this one. If you can oblige me in this I should be very glad to have the pass at your earliest convenience. I am / yours very truly / Benj F. Butler.”

Reverse post script:...”Referred to President Dillon—E.H. Rollins”  /  “Mr. Dillon says you must give this note or pass as you think proper. He don’t want to be troubled so much about passes—they will give you what blanks you want or sign any you fill up.”

Benjamin F. Butler was one of the more colorfully controversial political / military figures of the Civil War-Reconstruction eras. At the writing of this letter in 1876, Butler was a Massachusetts congressman and perennial candidate for the Massachusetts governorship. He was also a financial wheeler-dealer par excellence as this letter suggests...a man of schemes and many affairs. This letter to wealthy Massachusetts businessman Oakes Ames obviously refers to railroad passes. The post-script seems to imply that Butler will be given whatever he wants in that regard.

This note strikes a characteristic note, showing Butler abuzz in the thick of business (in need of free railroad passes)--out in Omaha and Ogden, Utah.

Solid Ben Butler collectible. In protective sleeve.  [jp][ph:L]

This coat is the epitome of a Civil War Union general’s field uniform, a blouse following the popular sack coat pattern of the period, looking somewhat like an enlisted man’s fatigue blouse and suitable for campaign wear, but with a double row of… (1179-281). Learn More »
