Charles H. Town, born in Elba, NY in 1828, was a resident of Marquette, Mi when he enlisted on 8/8/61 as a Captain. On that date he was commissioned into Co. B, 1st Michigan Cavalry.  Promoted to Major on 8/22/61. Wounded in action at 2nd Bull Run on 8/30/62. Promoted to Colonel on 9/30/62.

Town commanded the regiment at Gettysburg, penning the after action report for the regiment.  He was in command of George Custer’s Wolverine Brigade at the time of this signature in December 1863. He was discharged due to his wounds on 8/17/64.

Town returned home; sadly he died not longer after on May 7, 1865 at the  young age of 36. He is buried in Hudson Cemetery in Dexter, Washtenaw County, MI.  [LD] [ph:L]
