Two Revolutionary War pay orders, one entirely by hand and the other a printed document filled out, both signed on the reverse by the recipients and docketed. The first is for 293 pounds four shillings lawful money to Doctor Samuel Mather, dated 11/3/1779. The second is for five pounds fifteen shillings and 9 pence to Capt. Peter Perkins, dated 2/6/1783. Both are from the “pay table office” of the state of Connecticut. The first is signed by Fenn Wadsworth and James Church; the second, by William Mosely and Wadsworth. The signatories are all members of Connecticut’s “Committee of the Pay Table.” Wadsworth had military service as Brigadier Major Sept. 1776 to April 1779 to Gen. Wadsworth of the Connecticut militia. Capt. Perkins does not show up in the Continental Army and so is likely CT militia. A Dr. Samuel Mather of Lyme, CT, (1742-1834) was appointed in October 1776 to take medicines to Connecticut troops in New Jersey. In addition to the signatures of the recipients on the back and the dockets, an auditor in each case has placed his name across the original signatures of the pay orders. Both are in very good condition.  [sr][ph:L]
