This item features a big, bold “Benj F Butler” 2 inch signature under a circular imprint seal of the State of Massachusetts, 2” in diameter, laid in on paper measuring 6.5” x 4. Exhibits slight underlying stain at the four points of attachments while remaining quite attractive.
Although undated, signed in conjunction with the state seal, this autograph obviously dates from Butler’s term as Governor of Massachusetts, to which, after numerous defeats, he was elected in 1882, an office which he hoped to use as a springboard to the 1884 Democratic presidential nomination--(a forlorn hope, as the nomination went to Grover Cleveland).
In the large scheme of things, Ben Butler was easily the most colorfully controversial political / military figure of the Civil War / Reconstruction era. And, on the civilian side of things, this state seal autograph symbolizes the capstone of his political career while qualifying as his last hurrah before being elbowed out of public life in the mid-’80s This state seal autograph may be classier he deserves, but is probably the one to have, representing Ben on his political side. In a protective sleeve. [jp][ph:L]
