Dated Oct. 22, 1864, at Dublin, VA, this is an eight-line letter addressed by Brig. Gen. John Echols to Major I. Stoddard Johnston, Acting Assistant Adjutant General forwarding an affidavit and requesting a permit for John C. Bowyer, CS Commissioner, Staunton, VA, “to take two barrels of flour, and some other small family supplies from this Department to Staunton.” Excellent condition. Minor folds. Very neatly written in clear, thin brown ink, with good signature at lower right: “Jno. Echols / Brig. Gen.” Triple matted and framed with a copy CDV vignette bust view of Echols in uniform at top in an oval cut out.

Born in 1823, Echols was educated at VMI, Washington College, and Harvard. He passed the Virginia bar in 1843 and represented Monroe County in the VA House of Delegates 1852-53. As a delegate to the 1861 convention he voted for secession. Commissioned Lt. Colonel in 1861, he commanded the 27th VA under Jackson at First Manassas, and was commissioned Colonel soon after, taking part in the Valley Campaign and being wounded at Kernstown. Promoted to Brig. General in April 1862, he was a brigade commander in the Kanawha Valley Campaign and then commander of the Department of Western Virginia, resigning that post in late 1862. He commanded CS forces at Droop Mountain and commanded the CS right wing at New Market. In August 1864 he was given command of the District of Southwestern Virginia, the period of this letter. In late March 1865 he commanded the Dept. of Western Virginia and attempted to reach Lee with troops under his command, but diverted to Johnston on news of Lee’s surrender. After the war he returned to law in Staunton, served in the House of Delegates and was engaged in banking, passing away in 1896.

Frame is a narrow gilt wood with beaded inner edge, 11” by 17” ready to hang with strong eye-appeal.     [sr][ph:L]
