On printed Southern Express Company form—[“Forward Packages, by Passenger Trains and Steamers, and dispatches by Telegraph to all parts of the Confederate States.”] One page in ink on lined form, 4.75 x 8.5”. Exhibits fold-marks, neatly bolstered by archival tape on the reverse. Else VG & entirely legible.
Text: “Am about to move as indicated and will communicate by Ft. Mills or Rock Hill / Wade Hampton /Lt. Genl / 14 collect ___”
In the closing phase of the war, the prominent ANV cavalry commander had left Lee’s Petersburg, VA, lines to recruit soldiers in his native South Carolina. Just prior to this note to Gen. Beauregard (written by a staff officer) he had been promoted to Lt. General. (2/14/1865)
