Text: “Pay-Table office, June 3, 1782. Sir, Pay Somers Silertmen Seventy Four Pounds Seventeen Shillings out of the Tax of Two shilling and Six Pence on the Pound, granted in May last, exclusive of that Part payable in State Bills, and charge of State. / L.74.17 (Signed Finn Wadsworth / Oliv. Wolcott Jun /John Lawrence, Esq.; Treasurer.” W/reverse docketing endorsement.
During the colonial-era the Woolcott were one of the aristocratic first families of Connecticut. Oliver Wolcott Jr’s father and grandfather had both served as Governor of Connecticut, as Oliver Jr. was to later serve, 1817-27. Born in Litchfield in 1760, a graduate of Yale College, he served in the Continental Army, read law, and entered public service as clerk of the Connecticut Pay-table.
Serving as Connecticut Comptroller of Accounts following the war, he became Comptroller of the United States Treasury from 1791-95, and followed Alexander Hamilton as the second Secretary of the Treasury, 1795-1800. Serving briefly as a Justice of the of U.S. 2nd Circuit Court, he entered private life as a farmer, to later elected 24th elected Governor of Connecticut, 1817-27. Wolcott died on June 1, 1833, in New York City. He was the last surviving cabinet officer of the Washinton administration.
