JOSHUA LAWRENCE CHAMBERLAIN SIGNED CHECK

Chamberlain (1828-1914) will be familiar to even the most casual student of the Civil War for his defense of Little Round Top at Gettysburg, which earned him the Medal of Honor, and for his behavior throughout the war, which gained him promotion and a place in charge  of the surrender ceremonies at Appomattox. This is a relic handled and signed by the man himself: a bank check written out on September 30, 1870, and clearly signed by him “Joshua L. Chamberlain” at lower right.

The check is in good condition, bears a cancellation hole and blue pencil “19” at right center, well away from the signature, and countersignature by the recipient on the reverse. There are just minor folds and foxing. It would look great matted and framed with an image of Chamberlain.

Chamberlain’s citation for the Medal of Honor reads as follows: “The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 2 July 1863, while serving with 20th Maine Infantry, in action at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, for daring heroism and great tenacity in holding his position on the Little Round Top against repeated assaults, and carrying the advance position on the Great Round Top.”  [sr] [ph:L]
