Text:

“My Dear General…

I desire to present to favorable notice Lieut. Maynard of the U. State navy; who, I understand is to join the Army in command of a detachment of seaman, for military service. Besides claims to general regards and respect, for high personal qualities, this gentleman has won the beautiful applause of all who can appreciate extraordinary self-devotion, by the heroism he displayed in saving human life, in the shipwreck of the Atlantic steamer.

I believe him to be a young officer of sterling merit: and should it come in your way to help his purpose of underway military service, I might answer for his acquittling himself with distinction in any duty confided to him.

With sincere congratulation on glorious most glorious results of your campaign I remain my dear General with highest respect and great regards. Your Most obt….Jos. G. Totten.”

One of the very first graduates of West Point, Joseph Totten was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers in 1805. He then went on the serve nearly 60 years, becoming Chief of the Corps of Engineers in 1838 and achieving the rank of Brevet Major General just prior to his death in 1864. Totten was much admired by General Winfield Scott and enjoyed a highly distinguished career.

General William Worth was also a protégé of General Winfield Scott and won notice serving under him during the War of 1812, distinguishing himself at the Battles of Chippewa and Lundy’s lane. He later was engaged in bringing the first Seminole War to a peaceful settlement in 1842, and the won Mexican War fame during the Monterrey Campaign at the Battles of Contrera,  Churubusco, and Molinas Del Rey.

A solid collectible, connecting  two prominent military figures of the Mexican War era.  [jp] [ph:L]
