Dated January 24, 1865, Huntsville, AL. Pre-printed form/ “To all who shall see these presents, greeting:” This certificate promotes George W. Thompson to the rank of corporal in Co. “K”, 21st Kentucky Veteran Volunteers. Signed by “A.H. Bohannon, 1st Lieut., Adjutant”, and “Will R. Milward, Captain, Commanding the Regiment.” Exhibits fold-marks and light yellowing. Else VG and entirely legible.
George W. Thompson enlisted as a corporal and mustered into Co. “K”, 21st Kentucky Infantry, 10/2/1861. He re-enlisted and 1/4/1864 and was promoted again to Corporal the 21st Kentucky Veteran Volunteers, 1/25/1865. Mustered out 12/9/1865 at Victoria, TX. The 21st Kentucky Volunteers served with the Armies of Ohio and Cumberland and participated a number of Western engagements, including the Battles of Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, the Chattanooga Campaign, and the Atlanta Campaign and Nashville Campaign. Ordered to Texas in June 1865, the unit was mustered out at Victoria 12/9/1865uring service is lost 60 men killed and mortally wounded and 158 by disease for a total of 218. In protective sleeve w/white card backing. Accompanied by documentation.
