Born in Lyme, New London County, Conn., November 29, 1816. Member of Ohio state house of representatives, 1850; delegate to Ohio state constitutional convention from Lucas County, 1873; Chief Justice of U.S. Supreme Court, 1874-88. Died March 23, 1888. Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, Toledo, Ohio.
