No. 31, of Vol. 1. Wednesday, May 3, 1797.  Published by Daniel Dodge & Co., at their printing office near the Court House. 2pp., 4 columns, measuring 17.75 x 11.25”  (1 sheet, printed on both sides).

The first page consists of “Foreign Intelligence”—From London, March 8 & 9, received by the Venila, from Bristol, arrived, at New York. And from Paris and Hamburg, containing news of the French Directory of Napoleon’s correspondence with Pope Pius during his Italian Campaign. Also news of the disposition of the British fleet under Admiral Jervis, which had won the Battle of Cape Saint Vincent in February.

The second page contains “Domestic Occurences” from Lexington, Charleston, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York. Much of this news treats the arrival of shipping and is larded with details concerning the French—British conflict. As well as details of Indian raiding—“We understand that on the 31st day of January, a party of Indians attacked three hunters on the frontiers of the state of Tennessee, killed and tock all their horses and other property.”

In terms of condition, the paper is lightly chipped round the edges, and lightly soiled and yellowed, with traces of foxing. Else VG, and entirely legible. Good specimen of late 18th century American newspaper.
