Quantity Available: 1

Item Code: 1251-49

VOL. VII/ NO. 346. 16 pp. [513-528], ills., measuring 16.5 x 11.5”.  Exhibits one small half-inch front page smudge, light soiling and fading at margins, and light chipping at the corners. Else VG.

This issue features front page coverage of  John Hunt Morgan’s Confederate raid into Ohio, which occurred  three weeks after the fall of Vicksburg and  Confederate defeat at Gettysburg. The front cover illus. depicts “Morgan’s Raid—Entry of Morgan’s Freebooters into Washington, Ohio.”

Interior illustrations include an impressive double spread of a map of Charleston, SC, and its environs, and various coastal islands. As well as  “Reminiscences of the Maryland Campaign,” which contains scenes of  the Potomac at Williamsport, and  “The Charge of the 6th Michigan Over Rebel Earthworks at Falling Waters,” by famed sketch artist A. R. Waud. Also bust portrait lithos of Generals George Strong  and Quincy Gilmore, naval  Captain John Rodgers, and “The Late Colonel Robert G. Shaw [Colonel of the 54th Massachusetts,  recently killed in the assault on Battery Wagner,  Morris Island, SC].

Editorially, the magazine notes the suspension of campaigning during the dog-days of August. Everywhere that is, except Charleston. There  “a handful of gallant men, led by Gilmore, ably seconded by our iron-clad navy, are slowly but surely undermining the rebel strong-hold - the nursery of treason.” The editors also speculate gloomily on the possible fate of the captured prisoners of the black 54th Mass. Infantry, and urge the Lincoln administration continue to insist on their receiving fair and equal treatment by rebels.
