Vol. XV—No. 766. 8 pp., 16.75 x 22,” six columns. Exhibits fold-marks & light chipping at the margins. Else VG & entirely legible.
This paper was published five days before the infamous “Sack of Lawrence” by Missourian “Sheriff” Jones and his 200 pro-slavery ruffians. And, the paper is loaded with headlines and correspondent stories from “Bleeding Kansas” and Lawrence itself in advance of the slaughter to come.
Headlines: “IMPORTANT FROM KANSAS. MORE BORDER RUFFIAN OUTRAGES. [Governors] ROBINSON, REEDER AND OTHERS INDICTED FOR HIGH TREASON.” Followed by four columns detailing the machinations of both sides following the passage of the bogus “LeCompton” state constitution. Punctuated by shooting, pistol whippings and murder. (With “ Ossawatamie” John Brown in the wings.)
The front page also offers “A Fatal Affray In Washington,” featuring a murder at Willard’s Hotel of a hotel waiter by an irate Congressman (Herbert of California), who, upon arriving too late to be served breakfast, instigated what became a free-for-all with four men struggling over a pistol. An adjacent story bears the title “The Slaughter at Willards.” The editorial page contains much more concerning the “Congressional Homicide” and “The Kansas Investigation.”
A fascinating newspaper collectible from the roller-coaster “Bleeding Kansas” 1850s. In a protective sleeve, w/white card backing. [jp][ph:L]
