Volume 6—Number 15. 8 pp., 16 x 22”, six columns. Exhibits chipping along the left margins, with two, small unobtrusive tape repairs. Else VG plus and entirely legible.

In March 1861 New Orleans was a big cosmopolitan seaport second only to New York City in importance.  The Delta was one a half dozen of a half dozen New Orleans papers of the time, this particular “Sunday” edition appearing a day before Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration.

The front page features a lengthy three column critique of  the first volume of John Lothrop Motley’s History of the Dutch Republic,  before moving on to  “The Antediluvian Administration,” a scathing indictment of the retiring Buchanan administration, which the Delta characterizes as “a hollow truce, a treacherous respite.” The Delta then pauses for local amusements, noting that “at the St. Charles Theater, Miss Maggie Mitchel, has just complete a week of fair success,” and that “the New Christy Minstrels wind up their engagement at the House of Music to-nite”.

Interior pages feature  from “special correspondents” in London, New York & Washington. Along with “River Intelligence”, “City Intelligence” and financial news, there is marine intelligence and listing of innumerable shipping bound for Liverpool, Glasgow, Havre and other foreign ports. In scanning the shipping list, readers will keep in mind within six weeks the Union naval blockade will shutter New Orleans and bring its shipping  to a screeching halt. With Lincoln due  to be inaugurated the following day, and with Ft. Sumter just up ahead, the New Orleans depicted in this March, 1861 issue is teetering on the brink.

Superb New Orleans Civil War newspaper collectible.   [JP] [ph:L]
