Three-piece, link ladder badge, with upper bar pin, made of German silver (with silver plated upper bar pin). Maker mark: “Steiner & B. Co./ St Louis,” (on lower “shield” shaped section).

Stamped markings, top to bottom: (1) “Chas. Gascoigne” (2) “Ridgeville, Mich.” (3) Co. K./ 4^th N.Y./ Hea. Art.” The lower drop features a 2^nd Corps clover leaf with a 2” at center, flanked by crossed cannons. Lower “shield” shaped section exhibits a slight nick or two on the reverse. Else VG plus, and handsome.

Charles Gascoigne was a 19-year-old resident of Rochester, NY, who enlisted first as a private into Co. “F”, 13^th NY Infantry, a two-year regiment mustered in April 1861. During its service this unit was engaged at the First Battle of Bull, and the 1862 Peninsula Campaign, through the Battles of Second Bull Run, Antietam and Fredericksburg. At its mustering out, 5/13/1863, the 13^th had lost 67 killed and mortally wounded, and 29 by disease for a total of 100.

Gascoigne then mustered into Battery “K”, 4^th New York Heavy Artillery, 2/22/1864. He was promoted to Corporal, 11/30/1864, and then to Sergeant, 8/2/1865, and was mustered out 9/26/1865. Organized in New York in December 1861, this unit served in the Washington Defenses until March 1864. Attached to the 2^nd Corps it engaged in all the battles of Grant’s 1864 “Overland” Campaign and on through the Appomattox Campaign battles leading to Gen. Lee’s surrender. The 4^th New York Heavy Arty. mustered out 9/26/ 1865. During service it lost 126 men killed and mortally wounded and 334 to disease for a total of 454.
