This paper was appeared just following the notorious “Dahlgren Raid”, in which 4000 Federal cavalry troopers were foiled in their attempt to free Federal prisoners in Libby prison while wreaking havoc on the city at large. Although organized by General Kilpatrick, the “Dahlgren Raid” took its name from Colonel Ulric Dahlgren, one of General Kilpatrick’s subordinates killed by the rebels, in whose pockets were found orders for the assassination of Jefferson Davis.

The March 8th, Richmond Examiner characterized recent the raid as follows:

“The depredations of the last Yankee raiders, and the wantonness of their devastation, equal anything heretofore committed during the war. The farm-houses visited by them in Goochland they destroyed the provisions, hacked up the furniture and stole the table silver. Mr. James M. Morson’s house they set fire to three times. They fired Mr. James A. Seddon’s barn, corn-house and stables. The barn was consumed, the negroes succeeded in saving the other buildings But it would be endless to attempt to particularize their acts of vandalism, if, indeed, many of their deeds were not too revolting to be recited in a Christian community. The disgusting orgies in which they spend three hours in the neighbourhood of Dover Mills should bring the blush of shame to the brows of even Yankee women. “Picked men” indeed! They must have been picked out for their low tastes and brutal natures.”

As for the corpse of Colonel Dahlgren:

“Dahlgren’s body was boxed up at Walkerton on Sunday and brought to Richmond, with the object, we understand, of its positive identification, and the establishment of the fact of the finding of the infamous documents upon it, all of which has been attested by witnesses. Henceforth the name of Dahlgren is linked with eternal infamy, and in the years to come, defenceless women and innocent childhood will peruse, with the a sense of shrinking horror, the story of Richmond’s rescue from the midnight sack and ravage, led by Dahlgren….He has “swept through Richmond” on a pine bier and written his name on the scroll of infamy instead of “on the hearts of his countrymen,” never to be erased. He asked the “blessings of almighty God” on his mission fo rapine, murder and blood, and the almighty cursed him instead.”

As for captured Raiders:

“The Raiders, concerned in the last “on to Richmond”, had been cooped at the Libby to the of three hundred and twenty-one, up to last night…..Ninety one were received on Saturday, with forty stolen negroes, recaptured, who were sent to Castle Thunder to await the claims of their owners, who have no fear of the Ape’s emancipation proclamation before their eyes…..officers and men are kept separated from the other prisoners captured in legitimate warfare….”

War time Richmond newspapers are scarce. Excellent collectible, in protective sleeve.
