Port Royal Sound and the harbor town of Port Royal, SC, were captured by a Federal amphibious assault on November 7, 1861. This newspaper, “The New South”, published by Jos. Sears, became the new town paper with a Union voice.
This issue contains the text of a poem entitled “King Cotton” by R. H. Stoddard; an article about the assault on Fort Wagner; a description of the newly built ironclad “Dictator”; the recent bombardment of Fort Sumter; a short list of recent soldier deaths; an article containing miscellaneous war news from the North, including the Second Battle of Charleston, a northern raid into Mississippi, and the burning of Lawrence, KS by Quantrill’s Raiders.
An unusual southern “Union” newspaper. Excellent collectible.
