Dated May 13th, 1863, this extraordinary document provides an account of the end of Lieutenant Charles D. Rossiter’s life.
Colonel Robert F. Taylor wrote this note from the headquarters of the 33rd New York in White Oak Church, Virginia which reads:
“Head Quarters 33rd N.Y.S.V.
White Oak Church VA.
May 13th 63
A.B. Brown
Care Thomas Slocumb
35 Park Place
New York
Lieutenant Rossiter died in the hands of the enemy night before last. His body has been procured and will be taken home by the regiment, which leaves here Friday – you can meet us in Washington.
R.F. Taylor
Col. Commdg. 33rd.
35 collect(?)”
Lieutenant Rossiter enlisted at the young age of 21 and was commissioned as a 1st Lt. in Company D of the 33rd. Records indicate he was wounded on May 4th, captured on the 5th, and died as a POW on May 11th.
A truly haunting message from a well-known officer about a tragic casualty of Chancellorsville. A unique and exceptionally rare piece that would be a highlight of any Civil War collection. [CM][ph:L]
