This letter was written by a Sallie Griffith on August 18, 1862 from Cascade, Virginia to her cousin, a Confederate soldier in Company H of the 15^th Virginia named James Griffith.

In it, she mentions a sick relative who is recuperating at home and shares news about a mutual friend or relative in the 38^th Virginia named Andrew, saying, “I have good news to tell you, Andrew is at Richmond, he was missing at the Battle of Williamsburg, we thought he was killed but he was taken prisoner, they exchanged prisoners and he was sent to Richmond a few days ago.” She goes on to say “I hope you will get this, I want you to go to see Willis, he camped near Richmond, he would be glad to see you, he belongs to the 57^th Regiment, Andrew belongs to the 38^th Regiment that is near Richmond I hope you will meet him for I know you feel lonely without one relative but I hope God will be with you and protect you from all harm, trust in him for he is the best friend man ever knew, I will close my short letter I will write more the next time, good by I shall even pray for your happiness and safe return.”

The letter is written on a piece of lined blue paper measuring 5.25” x 8.1” and is in great condition.  Slight creases from folding are present, along with some faint surface staining to the back from the interior of the very small envelope that accompanies the letter.  The envelope/cover is quite small, measuring 2.5” x 3.6” and is addressed to “Mr James H Griffith Richmond VA company H 15 regiment ?e Trupes(?) Cobbs brigade in care of Capt Stone”.

A unique and rare southern letter to a Confederate soldier in the field on the eve of 2^nd Manassas and Antietam with a personal note offering proof of life of a friend and relative, sure to be a great addition to any Civil War letter or document collection. [cm][ph:L]
