Circa 1862. Two pages in ink on line paper, 5” x 8. Exhibits fold marks, lightly faded. Else VG.
A resident of Lowell, MA, 19 year old George H. Muzzy enlisted as a private into Co. “F”, 26th Massachusetts Infantry. Promoted to Sergeant, he was listed as a POW, 10/26/1864 near Newtown, VA, was exchanged 3/27/1865, and mustered out 8/28/1865 at Savannah Georgia. His unit served in the Dept. of the Gulf [Louisiana] from 1862-64, before returning to Virginia. Served with the Army of the Shenandoah through Lee’s surrender, then served in the Dept. of the South, mustered out and discharged in Boston, Sept. 12-18, 1865.
“Last sabbath PM there was an Agent of the U.S. Freedman’s Association at our Church with three slave children from New Orleans. One boy and two girls. The boy was as white as you was while you was at his age which was nine years. The girls are a little darker but as white as most children. They sang and spoke some pieces they are very pretty children. The boy was a native of Virginia and was sold with his mother to go to New Orleans and while Gen. Butler was there they was released to from jail from where they was sent for safekeeping…
Hattie Lowd’s soldier boy has got home and they are married and live Worcester. Lieut. Col. Lantelle has got home and the report is that he been discharged. Do you know anything about it? Perhaps he did not have his commission renewed when the regiment re-enlisted and that is why he is at home. I see by the papers that Eugene Perry was wounded in the last battle. Jane Birham has gone home to attend her brother’s funeral. They are expecting the body home this week. I can’t write any more this time. The friends all wish to be remembered to you.”
Interesting letter with slavery references. Invites further regimental research. In protective sleeve. [jp][ph:L]
