This original, British .45 caliber lead Whitworth bullet is a very rare artifact recovered in Reynolds Woods by local resident and relic hunter Ron Miller
The following relics were once part of the Ron Miller Collection. Ron was born and raised in Gettysburg. He was a 1953 graduate of Gettysburg High School and a 1957 graduate of Shippensburg University. Ron served in the United States Army Reserve! Ron was employed by the local school district mainly at the Keefauver Elementary School for 36 years, where most of the small family children attended, when Ron was principal. Ron’s brother Edward or “Ed” of Gettysburg was a very avid relic hunter in and around Gettysburg amassing a large relic collection of Gettysburg artifacts. Known to many local people in the collecting community, his collection has been featured in many books on collecting. Ed’s interest in relic hunting became his brother’s Ron passion also, amassing a large Gettysburg collection, hunting mainly on the first days of the battlefield, west of town where Ron lived. In January 2006 Ron passed away. His family refrained the collection until recently when most of his collection was sold to a public auction. The following artifacts are from Ron’s collections.
The cylindrical Whitworth bullet, the only style used in the American Civil War, was produced in England for the highly accurate British “Whitworth” target of sharpshooter rifles. These bullets were used during the war and only Confederates are known to have imported these rifles and its special ammunition. Made by the Eley Brothers firm in London. The bullet is in dropped condition, unfired and not distorted. Has a nice white patina. [ws] [ph:L]
