Dated “St. Louis, Missouri, Twenty Fourth Day of October 1862.” Signed by Governor H.R. Gamble. Printed form, 7.75 x 10.5”, mounted on beige card. Exhibits fold-marks, else VG.
Calvin W. McClain was promoted to Major and transferred to Field & Staff, 2nd Missouri Cavalry on 12/6/64. His unit was raised in December 1861 and mustered out September 1865. It specialized in counter-guerrilla operations during the early part of the war, shifting later to conventional service against regular Confederate forces. It was engaged at the Battles of Kirskville and Westport among other.
