Published by the N.Y. Workingmen’s Democratic Republican Association; printed by the Loyal Publication Society. Measures 19 x 11.5”, mounted on green mat, in modern black frame measuring 19 x 23”. Lightly yellowed & wrinkled, w/right margin curled slightly inward. Exhibits single 12” vertical tear neatly & cleanly taped from the back. Else VG, sharp, clean & entirely legible.
This broadside was one of several issued by the Democratic-Republican’s workingman’s Assn. of N.Y. in the wake of the 1863 New York draft riots. It essentially accuses the copperhead head faction of the democratic party of with stirring up working men & fomenting the draft riots on behalf of the rebellious traitors intending to enslave all labor. Partial transcription:
“The true object of Democratic institutions is to promote the security, happiness, freedom, and prosperity of the people, under a government of their own framing…the government of the United States is of this kind. Politician, ambitious of place and power, and who have for more than thirty years plotted the overthrow of Democracy, have during all that time been guilty of a great fraud on the Workingmen of the country…In the name of Democracy they advocate the interest of traitors who hate freedom, and who believe that Slavery is the true condition of all Labor…In the name of Democracy they have stirred up the laboring men and have filled the streets of New York with bloodshed, arson, and riots, and have disgraced us in the eyes of the world…they denounce the heroic soldiers of the Union as “Bull Dogs and Hell Hound’ who are engaged in murder and arson, and not in a noble effort to save our democratic institutions from destruction…stand firmly by your own interest---the interest of Free Labor everywhere! Stand firmly by your government, and vote only for me who will be true to you and to your children.”
A striking and unusual political broadside, beautifully framed. With accompanying historical commentary.

Regular army officers had been authorized a silver “U.S.” within a gold bullion wreath for wear on their undress caps in 1839. This was carried over in the 1851 regulations for use on the 1851 shako, but was embroidered directly on the blue band… (2020-912). Learn More »
