An original broadside from the Confederate Office of Field Transportation in Charlottesville notifying residents of Augusta and Albemarle counties of an impressment to supply the Army of Northern Virginia with 300 animals in ten days. (We presume horses or mules would have been specified and this refers to cattle or pigs for army rations.) This is dated 2/28/65, at the tail end of the siege of Petersburg and Richmond, and the writer, identified as Joel Miller A.Q.M. notifies residents that since he is responsible for thirty-one counties and can’t send an agent to each farm he has divided Albemarle county into districts and created five meeting places for residents to appear with their animals on a particular day, ranging from March 6 to March 9 by location, to plead their case to a board of three citizens who will choose what animals to take and at what price. This is followed by the locations, dates, and board members who will make the selection. He concludes with, “There is an immediate necessity for the animals, and I appeal to the people for active assistance.”
The condition is very good, with three small glue stains on the top edge, overall foxing, but legible text with just a hole at top partially obscuring “Army of N[ort]hern Va.” which is clear enough, “the coun[ties of Augu]sta and Albemarle” and “conducting an im[pressment in] thirty-one counties,” all of which seem certain as well. A small hole to the left of “JOEL MILLER, A.Q.M.” at bottom does not seem large enough to have taken out a military title and he is likely a civilian official in the department.
This is an interesting document, especially given the date, certainly reflecting the increasingly desperate circumstances in the which the Confederate army found itself. [sr][ph:m]
