An April 21, 1866, dated reward poster advertising $300 for return of two ne’er-do-wells who broke out of the Schenectady County Jail in New York while awaiting trial for burglary. This comes with its original stamped envelope addressed to the Sheriff of Essex County, NY, obviously to alert him to the breakout of one Jacob Alcombrack and a Jerome Fletcher, both supposedly around age 22 and described on the broadside. Out of curiosity we ran their names and the name Alcombrack seems uncommon enough to identify our man as the Jacob Alcombrack who enlisted at Albany (though then giving his age as 21) and served in Co. E 1st NY Mounted Rifles from 7/7/1862 to 6/12/1865. We note he went in as a corporal and came out a corporal, but managed to get himself reduced to the ranks in between. Jerome Fletcher seems too common to be sure, but we find only two soldiers in the Union army with that name- in the 4th Mass and 22nd NY. A quick newspaper check does not reveal any date of capture for the duo, though we do see that Alcombrack seems to have ended up in Evergreens Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY—unless there were two of them. His companion, Jerome Fletcher, may still be out there.

The condition is excellent. One small edge nick at right at shown and a slight water stain at top right. [sr][ph:m]
