One page, 8.5” x 11.5. Exhibits fold-marks, light soiling, and one tiny chip in lower right corner.
This anonymous northern broadside features “Extracts from a Speech by Alexander H. Stephens” prior to his election as vice President of the Confederate States. His speech, delivered in the Secession Convention of Georgia, on 31st day of January, 1861, sternly cautioned southerners against secession, warning of the horrors of the war to come.
Asking the leading question “Who Commenced the War?”—the broadside concludes with a “catalogue of remarkable events”, also published in a Southern Almanac, listing warlike actions committed by the South during the Buchanan administration; summing up its case with a quote from a friendly Canadian Newspaper—The Montreal Witness--exonerating of Abraham Lincoln:
“Now all these were warlike and treasonable acts, and all were committed before Mr. Lincon entered office. It is simply ridiculous to say that he commenced the war…It was not until Ft. Sumter was surrendered and evacuated that President Lincoln issued his first call for volunteers to put down the Rebellion..”
Published in the immediate aftermath of Ft. Sumter (”For sale by all News Agents. Price, $1 per 100”), this broadside uses the warning its own Vice President to absolve Lincoln and pin the blame for war on the Confederacy.
A masterful piece of Union propaganda. Superb collectible. In protective sleeve. [jp][ph:L]
