This pencil drawing shows a large Parrot gun propped up in a timber frame to fire at a high angle. Sandbags are piled about, but the frame is more for displaying the tube at fighting angle than functional. A body of water with waves breaking against land in the distance is visible in the near distance. To the left is one piece of low-lying land with a single tower. To the right, separated by the water, is a low cityscape punctuated by a number of steeples. It seems pretty clear that we are looking at a view of Charleston from one of the forts around the harbor. The drawing is done on Strathmore Drawing Board with its thistle trademark, which dates it no earlier than the 1890s. From the angle at which the city appears, the drawing may be made from a position in or near Fort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island. The first bit of land, then, might be the ruins of Fort Sumter, whose lighthouse, was destroyed during war, rebuilt immediately afterwards, and then once again in the 1890s after a storm.
The drawing is nicely executed. No figures are present, which makes the scene more contemplative and focuses on an abandoned instrument of war and a city returned to an active life in the distance. The image is about 3.5 by 6.5 inches on paper about 6 by 7.5, which is laid on a blue background in a gilt frame measuring about 12 by 13 inches. The back is sealed with black paper and a hanging wire is in place. [sr][ph:L]
NOTE: The frame does contain glass. See our policy for shipment of framed items.
