Wonderful framed lithograph of the Declaration of Independence.
The text of the Declaration is at the center of an oval and done a beautiful cursive with facsimiles of all the signer’s signatures at bottom. What makes this piece so attractive is the art work around the text.
At top center, within a laurel wreath, is a view of Independence Hall. The wreath around it is tinted gold. This is flanked by heavy scrollwork on both sides and the by the wording “DECLARATION” and “INDEPENDENCE.” The word “OF” is centered in a riband below the art work of Independence Hall. The lettering is done in blue with a red outline.
At bottom is a scene of the signing of the document in 1776 and below that is the seal of the State of Georgia within a rococo frame and all is flanked by six full-color American flags, three on each side.
The rest of the print is taken up by all the seals of the original thirteen colonies, six on each side and Georgia at the bottom center, as already mentioned.
Each of the state seals is framed in gold tinted scroll circles that are interconnected throughout.
At bottom of the piece, in very small print, is the publishing information. The print was engraved and published by J. C. Buttre of New York with the lettering done by C. Craska and the border drawing by W. Momberger.
The item is in very nice condition with some minor scattered foxing from age. It is housed in what looks to be the original wooden frame that meas. approx. 18.75 x 22.50 inches. Frame also contains a powder blue mat.
Frame has a cardboard backing that should be replaced with something more archivally friendly. The piece comes ready to hang on the wall. [AD] [PH:L]
