The face of this white metal disc has a bust of George Washington surrounded by his name and “BORN FEBRUARY 22, 1732.”

Reverse is stamped “BENJ CHAMBERLAIN, CO. G, 59^TH MASS. REGT, MIDDLEBURY, MASS.”

Disc has some light surface dirt and oxidation but is otherwise good and easily readable.

Benjamin F. Chamberlain was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts. He was listed as a 34 years old farmer when he enlisted in Company G, 59^th Massachusetts on February 17, 1864. At the time he was described as being 5’ 4” tall with gray eyes, brown hair and a light complexion.

Records show that Chamberlain was wounded in front of Petersburg on September 22, 1864 and died of chronic diarrhea at Beverly General Hospital in Beverly New Jersey on December 10, 1864. He is buried in grave number 117 in the National Cemetery there.

The 59^th Massachusetts was organized on April 1, 1864 and was engaged at Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and the attack of Fort Stedman. The regiment lost 8 officers and 176 enlisted men killed, died of wounds and disease.    [ad] [ph:L]
